Steno Beach

Steno means narrow or constructed in Greek, and in this case is a description of the landscape and the name of the beach.

Astypalaia is a butterfly shaped island with a small narrow strip of land in the middle that connects the two rugged wings. The sandy beach at Steno is part of the narrow isthmus connecting the butterfly’s wings.

The water is extremely shallow at Steno, you have to walk along way before the water reaches your stomach. It is also a stunning patchwork of shades of blue and turquoise.

Luxuries abound at Steno, ample parking, chairs, umbrellas, shade trees and last but not least the Steno Cantina.

It is actually a food truck/wagon, but it cooks up some of the most delicious food on the island. The have the best goat. Period, Full stop. You owe it to yourself to go and sample some. Goat not your style? Fried potatoes, meatballs, dakos salad are all scrumptious. I’ve never had a bad meal there.

I always visit this beach multiple times when I visit. It is a crowd favorite, but worth braving the masses.
