Agios Ioannis at Last!!

The dirt road we set out on was wide and well maintained. We followed the advice of a local businessman, who told us not to take any of the side roads that popped up. Finally, after a 30 or 40 minute ride the church and the Greek flag came into view! We had finally reached Agios Ioannis, and we were the only people there.

Today we were determined that we would reach Agios Ioannis. Yesterday’s misadventure would not deter us. We got up early, 6am in order to avoid tourists or trash trucks blocking the road.

We walked the perimeter of the church, taking pictures of the stunningly rugged surroundings and the sea beyond.

A key, kindly left in the lock, allowed us to enter the small church. It was immediately obvious that is was a frequently used church. Outside in the back of the structure was a huge open patio with white party lights. It must be amazing to see it lit up at night.

An hour slipped by and we decided to head back down the best maintained dirt road on the island. Both of us were thrilled to have finally realized our goal of visiting Agios Ioannis.
